Average review score:

a credible book to credit great artwork
I found this book ot be an excellent asset to my collection of modern british art. I thought that the large amount of content was covered thouroghly, but not drawn out to get stale(just like the artwork itself, discussed). This is a very important book because it recaps all of what is happening with the yBa movement in the artworld. This book is for anyone who wants to be on top of the world of modern art.

The Gulf War: Its Origins, History and Consequences
Published in Hardcover by William Heinemann Ltd (May, 1991)
Authors: John Bulloch and Harvey Morris
Average review score:

thirteen years later and no conclusion
One of the greatest revisionisms of the contemporary Middle Eastern history has been the readoption of the term "GULF WAR" for refering to the conflict to expel Saddam's forces from Kuwait. As noted by many experts, this conflict was neither a war nor was it fought in the Persian Gulf. It was mainly a one-sided air campaign fought over the skies of Iraq-- very much like the officially declared "non-war" against Serbia in Spring of 1999.

We read about the real gulf war (80-87 Iran-Irq war) in this classic by Bulloch & Morris. Written before August 1990, we read this book knowing the ending better than the authors. And this makes the fast-paced read gain an eery beat. What were the Americans thinking when they established friendly relations with Iraq as Saddam's troops lobbed mustard gas on Iranians-- or when US provided the satellite info which was used to launch the most horrific of the battles, the nerve gasing of the Iranians at Fao? The same goes with the rest of the "liberal" West who help strengthen the monsterous war machine which has been only contained at the price of the Iraqi people's suffering.

The Iran-Iraq war changed two nations-- and the strategic and historic center of the world-- forever. Iran is married to its religious rulers not because of any fanatic obsession, but because of the images of the young boys who sacrificed themselves in the marshes around Shatt-ol-Arab. It's like a mother wearing only black because of her dead children's memory. And Arab nationalism's death as a political movement happened in Iraq, not because of any courntry's peace deal with Israel.

I said we know the conclusion better than the authors-- but we really don't. All we know is that there have been a couple more chapters and that the real conclusion takes place sometime in post-Saddam Iraq and post-Fahd Saudi Arabia. And how it turns out, as in the Iran Iraq War, will depend a lot on where the US-Iranian relations will be then.

my 1 year old loves this book!
My 1 year old has loved this book for several months. The pictures of kids in action are big and bright. She's also learning how to do each action herself. I'm planning on buying a few more books from this wonderful "my turn" series.

The Concept of Law (Clarendon Law Series)
Published in Paperback by Clarendon Pr (June, 1997)
Authors: H. L. A. Hart and Raz Bulloch Hart
Average review score:

Inadequacies of Hart's concept of a rule
Hart insists that there are many differen kinds of rules - he only 'elucidetes social rules' -but he also accepts that not all legal rules are social rules. What then are they? The foundation of his account of a social rule is an aspect of the form of life (vide Wittgenstein) underlying the use of language - but it is life without the multiplicity of activity at any one time and without conflict.

a seminal text on legal philosophy and jurisprudence
One of the most important books written in the field of jurisprudence and legal philosophy. A must-read for anyone who wants to talk intelligently about the topic. Each of Dr. Hart's chapters has been the springboard for entire areas of discussion since its publication, such as law as a system of rules, the separation of law and morality, etc. After you finish this book, read Prof. Dworkin's critique in "The Model of Rules," 35 Univ.Chi.L.Rev. 14 (1967) (excerpted in "The Philosophy of Law") and Prof. Dworkin's "Taking Rights Seriously" to see how Hart's theories have affect jurisprudential scholarship since the publication of this text in 1961. Again, if one had to select the top thinkers in the field, it's Austin, Hart, and Dworkin.

Big Play Book
Published in Hardcover by World Book Inc (October, 1998)
Authors: World Book, Ivan Bulloch, and Diane James

Hours of fun for our son
Whether a rainy (or snowy!) day or not, our son has thoroughly enjoyed playing with the pages of this oversize (20 x 30 inches) book! There are no words, just "scenes" that unfold as he turns the pages of the book:

- A city with roads, a traffic circle, gas station and other points of interest, the perfect size and place for small toy cars

- A "snakes and ladders" game board which we have also used to teach our son concepts of counting

- A picnic blanket with place settings. Our son "pretend eats" on this scene!

- An underwater maze with deep sea diver, sea animals and treasure chests

- A farm scene with barn, pastures, fields and farm animals, to which our son and his play group friends add own toy animals and farmers.

We have spent many happy times playing with our son on the pages of this book; and he has also played by himself and expanded his own imagination as well. When playtime's over we store this book right in a cabinet in the kitchen, so that it's ready for next time.

We all highly recommend it!

A Guide for Using Phantom Tollbooth in the Classroom
While some of the legally reproducable handouts in this guide were a little juvenille for my seventh grade English class, they gave me some great ideas as a "starting point" for creative classroom work and for making my own handouts. The guide was very helpful when creating classroom activities, particularly for team / cross-curricular work. The guide was a worthwhile purchse, however, for the price, I was disappointed that a copy of the book did not accompany it.

Sun, Snow & Rainbow! (My Turn)
Published in Hardcover by Two-Can Publishing LLC (September, 2000)
Authors: Diana James, Ivan Bulloch, Diane James, Lydia Monks, and Daniel Pangbourne
Average review score:

big bright board book
The entire series of "my turn" big board books by Two-Can publishing are bright, happy, fun books. My 2 year old son especially likes this weather-related title. Each two-page layout contains a simple painting on one page and a photo of a child dressed for a certain type of weather on the other page. The text is simple, like: "Lion sleeps, too hot to run./Let's play and swim in the sun."

I noticed that this book is also available as a digital download, and it would definitely make a great book to read on a computer, as an alternative to computer games.

Big, bright board book
My two-and-a-half-year-old son loves the "my turn" series of books by Two-Can publishing. This book, and the others in the series, is 8 x 8 inch square cardboard. The colors are bright and happy. Simple illustrations and photos of children, along with simple phrases in large type make these books a lot of fun. Toddlers can flip through the pages themselves, as well as have parents or teachers read to them. Recommend!
